While the economy is still in a bit of a rut struggling to gain a foothold of which to climb from, this offers a unique opportunity to consumers looking to purchase at less than market value. One of these opportunities is within the automobile market. We all had that one car we ransacked through high school – driving it as fast as we could on the open road, never changing its oil, and abusing it completely. The funniest part of this whole story is that we continue to drive it. At some point, that car will break down whether you like it or not and you’ll have to look into finding and financing a new or used vehicle. For those without a meaty budget, here are the best automobile options for under $10,000.
2006 Honda Civic
Of course it’s at the top. The Honda Civic has historically been one of the most reliable cars on the market. My father is still running his 1986 Civic with a youthful 256,000 miles in the dust. While it has coughed up a bit of phlegm in the last year or so, Hondas continue to be many buyers’ rock which they can drive each and every day.
2007 Hyundai Accent
The Accent is a nice little compact ride great for that half-hour commute to work. It gets 28 combined miles per gallon and will cost just under $6k. It’s perfect for road trips, clocked in at 33 mpg on the highway. We’ve taken a couple 8-9 hour trips with the Accent and have had no problems whatsoever. For those unable to finance a car upwards of $10k, the ’07 Accent could be right for you.
2005 Subaru Forester
For an SUV-type vehicle on a budget, the 2005 Subaru Forester can serve well as that troop transport vehicle. It’ll fetch 19 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway, so you could certainly do worse with a larger vehicle. Depending on the mileage of the vehicle will largely dictate the price, but assuming the vehicle is running with 100,000 miles, you may be looking more at $10.5k. For the budget buyer it’ll take some financing, but considering the overall package with the vehicle makes it worth that modest price point.
2008 Scion xD
While the look of this ride isn’t a sell-high on aesthetics (some may like it, some won’t), you can make out that $10,000 on a relatively new model car. Heck you might even be able to find a 2009 xD for under $10,000. If you’re paying that little for the car, it’ll likely be pushing over 100,000 miles, but it’ll still give you a decent lifespan even considering the amount of miles already under its belt.
You could go on and on about some of the other great value cars for under $10k – but these were the most affordable that will provide great utility for the owner. If you have some other great buys that you think fit this category, add to the discussion in the comments below!
