For those of you that are unaware, my son (Nicholas) turned one last week. I still can’t quite believe how fast the last year has flown by. I still vividly remember the trip to the hospital, my wife giving birth, the first time I held Nick and the regular trips to and from the hospital so I could be home to feed the dog and also be at the hospital as often as possible to support my wife. It was an interesting time in my life and little did I know how much fun and enjoyment that little man was going to bring into my life over the next year.

To say the last year had been all fun and games would be a lie. There have been ups and downs, but without a doubt the majority of them have been ups. I thought I had a good idea of what fatherhood was going to be like before Nick made his way into the world, but as it turns out – I was wrong. There really is no proper way to prepare for such a giant change in your life, I mean, you know your life will be different and that you will have a new set of responsibilities, but you just can’t fully appreciate it until it happens to you and you have a child that is 100% dependent on you to survive.

I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to experience life as a father to Nicholas and to also share the experience with my lovely wife Alexis. It has been an amazing journey so far and I can’t wait to see what the future hold for us all. My own father sent me a lifehacker article the other day, which you can read here. I think it details pretty much perfectly how I feel about being a father and how my own life has changed. If you have the time I highly recommend reading it.
