With Christmas just around the corner, I thought it would be interesting to look into how much everyone spends on Christmas gifts. For us this year will be the first year that our little man celebrates Christmas, and we want him to really enjoy it. It is also the first year that I have agreement with my mother that she will no longer buy my wife and I Christmas gifts. This is a huge step for us, as we have been trying to limit the amount of crazy Christmas spending that goes on in our family for quite a while and it is great to see that we have finally made some headway on this issue.
I personally think that Christmas gift giving can get way out of hand if you don’t stop and take stock of exactly where you are spending your money. At one point my wife and I were spending between $600-$1,000 on Christmas gifts each year. Looking back on this I am really disappointed in how much we spent on Christmas, especially considering that we never got into the true spirit of Christmas and only focused on the gift giving.
These days we only buy gifts for kids, and only kids in our immediate family. This means that we are only spending around $200-$300 and it means that everyone in our family gets to save their money and spend a little bit more on the kids. After all, most of the time the gifts that we adults give to each other are things that we don’t really want, and end up either in the trash of cluttering your home.
What I want to know is – who do you buy gifts for and how much do you spend each year on Christmas?
