So much is happening in my life right now that each day is starting to blur into the next. Months are passing by faster than I can keep track of at the moment, and I feel that it would benefit me to keep a log of my life’s events by doing a monthly post. This should keep me motivated and help me in continuing to realise both my personal and my blogging goals.
Before I get into this months wrap-up, I would like to thank everybody who visits my blog and contributes to the conversation. I feel that those of you who take the time to read my content and thoughtfully comment, make the site a richer resource for everyone to benefit from. It also makes my time posting to the site far more enjoyable, as I know that I am engaging with other like minded individuals.
I particularly want to give a big thank you to the following bloggers:
Each of them been significant contributors to my blog through regularly commenting and re-tweeting my posts. I truly appreciate the time and effort that you have all put in, and I want you to know that it hasn’t gone unnoticed 🙂
Each month I set myself goals to help make sure my life is heading in the direction I want it to be heading. Recently my goals have centred around this blog, but in the future I will be adding more personal ones into the mix.
Contact other bloggers and arrange to guest post
For the moment I think I will park this goal, my reasons for this are:
- My blog is growing WAY faster than I originally thought it would, so I have no need to guest post just yet
- I barely had time to write my own posts let alone guest post for others.
Post at least 1 time per week
Ok so I should have set a bit more of an ambitious target than that! Lesson learned.
Follow at least 50 people on Twitter
I managed to achieve this within the first 5 days of the month. Woohoo! Again, this wasn’t terribly challenging so I think next month I’ll have to pick up my act.
In case anyone is interested in the numbers pertaining to my blog.
Start of October ranking – 4,385,750
End of October ranking – 671,544
I’m happy to have broken the million mark, but I still have a long way to go.
Obviously I can’t continue at this pace and so I expect the next month may really see a slow down in how quickly I progress in the Alexa ranking.
Thank you to everyone that has followed me on twitter in this past month, you are all amazing!
Start of October followers – 30
End of October followers – 138
Growth – 108 followers
As many of you will be aware – I had a Facebook give away earlier in the month. It felt was a success and so am very happy with the results (check it out)
Start of October Likes – 0
End of October Likes – 1165
Growth – 1165 Likes
So far I have had about 30 people unlike my page after the give away 🙁
Fortunately some people must like my blog, because they have counteracted the negativity and hit the Like button on the side of my page – Thanks guys 🙂
Any of the rest of you who haven’t joined them yet, you can scroll up and click on the Like button now if you want. I promise the rest of the post will still be here when you get back 🙂
Thank you to those of you who have signed up for my email notifications.
Start of October subscribers – 5
End of October subscribers – 423
Growth – 418 subscribers
I think I might also enable feed burner as I have been asked a couple of times about an RSS feed now.
I have no idea how good or bad these site statistics are, but this is what my statistics program says:
September Unique visitors – 402
October Unique visitors – 3,051
Growth – 2,649
September Page views – 2,416
October Page views – 13,379
Growth – 10,963
I’ve been a little disappointed in how many searches I am receiving, however I’m not really doing any SEO so I guess that’s to be expected.
September Incoming Searches – 17
October Incoming Searches – 32
Growth – 15
I’m almost certain that my wife and I have spent more money in the last couple of months than in any other month we have been married. It has been ridiculous how much spending leakage is going on!
I think that we are spending more than normal because we were on holidays from work and because we are buying a whole heap of baby gear in preparation for our first child.
To counteract this and to make myself more accountable, I am going to start tracking my expenses again. I will try to do a Sunday post detailing all the expenses that we had for the week so you can all shame me into being a better saver.
We did great with the mortgage this month.
Debt at the start of October -$33,779
Debt at the end of October -$32,907
Difference – $872
Start of October – $97,569
End of October – $90,150
Difference – $7,419
How did we pay so much?
Every year the company which my wife and I work for pays what is called gain sharing and performance pay.
Gain sharing is paid to staff as a portion of the total profit the company made over the year. This year the payment worked out to be about $2,500 per staff member. Seeing as there are 2 of us working there we managed to collect $5,000
The company also has a yearly performance pay time. This coincides with the gain sharing and is paid as a percentage of your wage (normally between 1% and 5%). The percentage that you receive is decided on by your manager. You have a meeting together where you tell them all the great things you did for the company throughout the year. I did quite well this year and collected about $3,500 in performance pay.
You can keep track of my mortgage payment progress here – My Debt Progress (The graph is starting to really look good on the second loan, hover over the lines to see the dollar figures)
In case you didn’t know – my wife and I are expecting our first baby in early January. We are both super excited about the arrival, but as the due date is getting ever closer we are starting to realise just how much still needs to be done.
So far we have purchased almost all the big things like a stroller, change table, bed and a car seat, but we are going to wait until after the baby shower to see what else we need to buy, as it is likely we should receive a couple of small things from that.
I think every week in November we have birthing classes at the hospital, so I imagine I’m going to be stretched for time again this coming month, not to mention all the family birthdays I will be attending…
My biggest concern with the baby at this point is how Ricky will handle coming second to a new baby in the house. He has had our undivided attention for 3 years now and I think he likes it that way…
I don’t normally talk to much about my share trading on here, but it is a revenue source and so it is probably worth mentioning from time to time.
Anyway, whilst I was on holidays, I did a little research into some stocks with the potential to return some decent quick short term profit. I saw a trading opportunity and took the plunge into a company called Neuren Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX:NEU).
I bought in at 3.4 cents a bit over a week ago and had a short term price target of 4.3 cents.
Despite exceeding my initial profit target of 4.3 cents (within the first few days), I am deciding to stay with this company until at least early next year. The reason for this is that the more research I have done on them, the more I like the long term story and the future potential of this stock. If everything goes to plan, they will have a drug to help treat people who suffer from Rett syndrome as well as potentially aiding people with autism.
Mobile Application Goal
I’ll be sure to tell you guys all about my mobile app once it’s closer to completion, but for now I’m just going to say that its a game (for Android and IOS) and that this month I have made some good progress on it. I really do need to spend a bit less time blogging and a bit more time on this project though.
I think I should be able to finish it in the coming months provided I focus on it and stop doing so many leisure activities.
- Set up Feed burner RSS
- Post at least twice per week
- Get to 210 Twitter followers
- Get to 1,200 Facebook followers
- Update my Personal Finance Links page
- Comment on other blogs at least twice per day
- Track every bit of mine and my wife’s spending
- Complete at least 10 levels in my mobile application
