You know the Red Bull slogan – Red Bull gives you wiiings. Well as it turns out, some customers decided that that slogan was a little bit misleading and that no matter how much Red Bull you consumed, you are highly unlikely to ever sprout wings. The end result was that they filed a lawsuit against Red Bull citing misleading advertising and Red Bull – No, i’m not joking at all – this is 100% for real.

In case you have no idea what I am talking about, check out the videos below. One showing you can grow wings by drinking Red Bull, the other showing that without Red Bull, you may as well shut the window and call it a night.

Super hero has no wings.

The crazy thing about all this is that now I expect to see all Red Bull commercials finishing with something like this one. Essentially telling you that you won’t grow wings just in case some clown can’t tell the difference between an advertising slogan which is obviously a gimmick versus reality.

At the end of the day, the outcome of the lawsuit was that Red Bull agreed to pay up to $13 million in compensation to anyone who has ever consumed Red Bull. This can be claimed in the form of a $10 refund from Red Bull, or up to $15 of red bull products for free – no proof of purchase required. To claim the money or free products, go to claim (filed online by no later than March 2, 2015).

The ironic thing about all of this is that I suspect the $13 million is not only small change for Red Bull, but the amount of media coverage that this has received is probably worth far more than $13 million, making this a highly successful advertising campaign.

I would love to hear your thoughts about this and if you think the world has gone a bit lawsuit crazy, or if this is completely justified?
