Don’t shoot the messenger, but the holidays (Christmas) is only 11 weeks away. I know, how the hell did that sneak up on me yet again? Fortunately for my wife and I, we don’t do any massive Christmas shopping these days, but I still like to try and save money where I can, and a little bit of planning can go a long way at this time of year.

Working out what you are going to buy the people in your life is probably the biggest headache most people have when it comes to holiday gift shopping. Everyone’s different, there’s a budget to work with and the crowds at the shopping centers are best to be avoided.

That’s why i’m a big believer in planning ahead on the gifts you want to buy. Take a couple of days to sit down and really think about all the different things you think people would like, and then add them to your watch list. What I tend to find is that between now and Christmas, there are plenty of opportunities to buy what you want for a discounted price, but if you wait until December, there is a good chance you’ve left your run too late and you will be stuck paying full retail. It’s also worthwhile checking out review websites for whatever it is you are looking to buy, as sometimes there are very similar items made by lesser known brands which can help you to save money.

As an example, I have been wanting to buy my wife a particular present for a while now (I won’t mention it here, as she does read my blog from time to time) but it’s always been more expensive than I would normally like to pay, but only this morning did I find that there was a seller who had the item on sale with a coupon that allowed me to save 30%, which all of a sudden puts this in my price range. I can’t wait to see her face when my kids give her this present.

The best part of all is that if you do start looking at gift shopping now, you can buy almost all your items online, get them delivered and avoid the crowds in the shops.
