I’ve been pondering what it would be like working for other people on the internet? I’ve always been on the other side of the equation and have now hired over 15 people for various roles over the last two years.
Most of my experiences have been good, with only one that went a bit off the rails, but I have never really thought about what it would be like having to work for me (or someone else for that matter). I assumes it’s a lot like working for someone else with your day job, but it does seem like there would be a lot more flexibility associated with working online.
The reason why I have been considering online work is because there is a good chance I won’t have a standard 9 to 5 job for much longer, and while that isn’t the end of the world as I have a number of online income generating websites, it is always good to have some extra ways to help aquire new money.
So I’m planning on taking one or two jobs on freelancer or upwork over the next few weeks, just to see what it’s like and to build up a bit of a portfolio should I ever want to take advantage of the opportunities websites like these present.
I’ve done some initial searches on things that I know I an good at (programming, SEO and writing about finance topics) and I have found at least 10 jobs that look interesting to me, however, the rate of pay looks to be a bit on the lean side. I guess that’s what happens when you are operating in a global market place. $5 or $10 an hour might seem terrible to me, but to someone in India or China, that’s probably a decent wage.
I suspect that if I ever want to earn some of the better hourly rates, i’ll have to market myself as a better option than my significantly cheaper rivals. It might even be that in the end it’s just not worth my time and effort to entertain this line of work, and instead I should focus on marketing my existing products.
Either way, I’ll find out soon ad report back – wish me luck!
