If you remember not so long ago I wrote about my wife and I getting back into monitoring our expenses, well now it’s time for me to detail exactly how much we spent in painstaking detail. The goal of this is to affirm to myself that we are doing the right thing, and to also identify the areas in which I think we are doing well, and the areas in which I think we are doing not so well.

So let’s get started:

Expense Breakdown

By far and away the biggest expense was on bills, but we also spent a large amount of groceries. Unfortunately health also featured heavily this month with both Nick and Ricky getting sick.

So there you have it. That is everything we spent throughout the month of May, all $3810.46 of it.

What have I learned?

  • We spend a lot of money on groceries and also seem to get lots of little things throughout the week outside of our major shopping day. I know we don’t get Chicken delivered any more as it was leading to wastage (you can’t order specific numbers, only pre set amounts), so that would lead to some of those shopping trips, but it still seems like a lot.
  • Rick and Nick both got sick in May, so that cost us about an extra $500 than normal.
  • The pay TV could be removed, but I do like watching my football game live, and Nick loves Nickelodeon Jr.
  • The security system is actually quite expensive to have monitored. However with all the breaking over the course of us living in this area, it is nice to know the police are on their way should something happen.
  • We bought pizza because we were feeling lazy – naughty! At least I used a discount code.
  • That insurance bill was a giant, but I want our stuff insured, so that is the price you have to pay.
  • I’m impressed that I only needed to fill my car up with petrol once for the month. Hopefully I can continue with that.

Question

Do you track your expenses? How are you doing with saving money?
