Do you volunteer your time at all? It’s something that I do far too infrequently, however, last weekend when my sons playgroup needed help, I offered my time to help as part of the sausage sizzle that they were putting on to try and raise funds.

I feel that my time is very important, perhaps even the most important thing I can give. So I am a little disappointed in myself that I don’t volunteer more regularly. Traditionally instead of volunteering, I would simply throw money at something that I thought was a worthwhile cause. Don’t get me wrong, most causes love that, but it feels a bit hollow in comparison to giving up your time and effort for something.

Sometimes I think I can become a little too consumed/preoccupied with what is going on in my own life, that I forget about those around me that are less fortunate or that require someone to spend time rather than just giving money. Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people and potentially make new friends. For far too long I have been unwilling to see the many benefits that volunteering provides and the opportunities it can create.

So this post is about reminding me not to be as stingy with my own time and to give more willing to others, particularly with my time rather than just with money. This is the type of behavior that I want to instill in my son, and so it is something that I should be role modelling / leading by example. After all, my son is there watching everything I do, he is like a sponge soaking up both the good and the bad that I show him. So I want to make a point of showing him that it is important to do a lot more good than to be selfish, and hopefully this is but the first step in my journey.

Do you volunteer your time? Are you like me and struggle to make time to do something charitable?
